Extended Reality Journalism

Extended reality technologies are a way to translate the world around us and to represent things we wouldn’t be able to see otherwise. A powerful application I explore is how to immerse people full in journalistic or research concepts.

I work with the Institute for the Future’s Emerging Media Lab, led by Toshi Hoo. When I was a full time researcher there, we created the Dafen Immersive Reality experience. I spent time in the Dafen Oil Painting Village in Shenzhen, China in 2017 and recorded the village with a variety of media, including 3D scans, 360 video and photos, and flat photos and videos. Everything was captured on site and then combined in Unity to create an immersive, interactive space.

If you have a HTC Vive at home, you can download a prototype build of the experience to try here:

If you want to partner with me to create immersive journalism and immersive research environments, then just send me an email at jjkirshbaum at gmail and we can start the conversation.
