Four Continents VR Project
My name is Joseph Andrews and I like to call myself a ‘Tech Enthusiast’. I work with Jeremy Kirshbaum in several capacities spanning several projects. I’m a Nigerian moving to South Africa for the next 6 months to intern with African Leadership Academy’s marketing team. I’m a researcher, project manager, and a budding entrepreneur, and I’m also really interested in psychology and marketing.
Along with several partners, we’ve been experimenting on “four continents VR”, a project where four artists in different continents create art simultaneously using masterpiece VR. The four artists are from Argentina, Nigeria, USA, and France. We also have four key partners working with these artists to bring this project to life. At the moment, the artists are getting comfortable working with other artists and masterpiece VR with regular practice sessions held every Wednesday and Saturday. If you’re interested, there’s a video of a live practice session between the artists below.
The overarching idea behind this project is important because it allows for a deep exploration about the boundaries of art, technology, time and space and it greatly fosters interrelationship and cross-fertilization of culture and intellectual resources amongst participants. It is also fairly risk, time, and cost effective and provides a very efficient co-creating space for the seamless integration of ideas. This, we believe will be an early yet inspirational stepping stone for the solutions that would ensue in the future.
The true essence of living lies in the obligatory action of communicating thoughts, ideas, even hopes, and despair. The human race has evolved a potentially infinite number of verbal and non-verbal approaches to communication. This has quickened the ignition of art to illustrate our unique thoughts and the new age of technological improvement has accelerated this quite a bit. Since the start of the century, the once dreams of instant communication across vast distances have met realization through the development of several technologies.
Immersive Technologies, such as virtual reality, have opened us up to a new world and a new way to experience and live in a rather synthetic world crafted deliberately to fit our purposes, at the cost of only a simple headset and some lines of code. In recent years, the concept of virtual immersion has been applied innovatively across diverse art and science disciplines to solve problems.
“- an artist’s dream is to build worlds pixel by pixel – Drue Kataoka, an artist, and technologist“
The prospect of virtual reality, however, extends far beyond the boundaries of visual art. It encompasses virtually every knowledge block there is. Perhaps, the most obvious value that virtual reality provides is at scale in the gaming industry, especially with regards to greater levels of engagement, giving rise to completely immersive gaming experiences that’s both cognitively and physically stimulating.
We’re still in the process of figuring out what the end product of this project will be. So far, we know that we want to have an event to cap it all where we would have other people come to masterpiece VR as spectators to observe the artists as they create along a certain theme (one we’re yet to decide upon), Feel free to reach out to us on sixervr@gmail.com if you are interested in learning more about this potential collaborative project or if you have any ideas about the project.
